Intihar, Wesley I joined the Navy from Geelong on 20/09/1983 at the age of 17. After completing my Recruit training I commenced my Initial Writers course in Jan 84 with POWTR Steve Salmon as my instructor. On completion of my course, I did a short stint in the Removals Office at Cerberusprior to posting to Chief of Navy Material at Navy Office under POWTR Morgan Dunbar. As one would expect, playing Aussie Rules for the Harman Hogs was mandatory. At the beginning of 86, I was posted to NOPO and initially worked in the Accounts Office with POWTR Morrie Johnston and LSWTR Robert ‘Bomber’ Browne. From there I was moved to the Campbell Park pay section and worked fromHarman with POWTR Trev Sweeney and LSWTR Al Dummett.
I joined Darwinin Dec 86 to commence my first see draft under CPOWTR J.J. ‘Bomber’ Atkinson and later CPOWTR Geoff Locke. My Leading Writers during my time onboard were Pete Liversley and Andy Beales with my partner in crime, ABWTR Gavin Calderwood. On promotion to LSWTR in Jul 88 I remained on Darwin for a further three months before joining MHQ Registry. I remained there for five months prior to joining Parramatta (DE46) in Mar 89 under CPOWTR Mark Bartolo. It is still my favourite posting with the ship spending 15 months out of 20 months ‘Up Top’, I had the privilege to decommission Parramatta in Jan 91 and remained on board as the Senior Writer for a further three months as part of the unfortunately named ‘Retard Party’. I still suffer to this day in being in this poorly named group.
In Apr 91 I joined Waterhenworking for CPOWTR Liz Budek and later CPOWTR Ron Giveen, and POWTR Derek Pratt. I also met my wife, ABWTR Ann-Maree Paterson (nee Carter) during this period. On promotion to POWTR in Aug 93, I was posted toWatson in the Tactical Training Building and then later in the Accounts Office. Oct 94 saw me posted back Cerberusas a Recruit School instructor. After completing three years at Recruit School, I was moved to the Personnel Office and worked with WOWTRs Leigh Doak and Geoff Kenley.
Jan 2000 saw me posted to Warramunga as the commissioning COSEC. I also had the good fortune of having LSWTR Marc Henderson and ABWTR Andy Maskell as my Writer staff. On Jul 02, I returned Cerberus as a category school instructor at the Supply School teaching Initial Writers the finer art of being writers. It was during my time at the School that I completed 20 years in the RAN, and Steve Salmon was still on hand to tell me to get my hands out of my pockets. On promotion to CPOWTR, I took up the position of Staff Officer Personnel at Cerberus in Jan 04. In Nov 04 I was posted to Anzac prior to it commencing Operation Northern Trident 05 which saw the ship travel to the Mediterranean, Gallipoli for 90th anniversary, Europe and South Africa. In July 06, I returned to Supply School as the Course Implementation Officer at Writer Training.

Jongewaard, Helga (nee HUNDERTMARK)I had wanted to join the Navy since I was 11 years old, when my parents gave me a “Girl’s Annual” for Christmas containing an article “Women in the Navy”, with wonderful descriptions of “living in condominiums by the sea”, travelling and meeting people from all over. I can’t say I wasn’t initially a little shocked at the real deal but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world and I’d do it all over again.
I joined the WRANS on 2nd of March 1970 from Adelaide as a recruit WRAN Writer (Official Number: W107867) travelling to Cerberus. After 6 weeks basic training and the Writer’s Course with POWTR Gordon Coucil, I was sent to work in the Pay Office. A job I absolutely loved, having my own pay section of just over 300 male recruits and their instructors, working alongside Ted Ozols, George Edgel and Mick Scully.
Near the end of April 1971 I was drafted to Harman, working at Navy Office under CMDR Snow, with POWRWTR Elaine Retallick, and it was there my career in the WRANS ended on the 28th of January 1972. I married a Harman sailor during the Christmas holiday break and was discharged on my return. It has been nearly 36 years since I left, still happily married to that same sailor (now Detective Sergeant for SA Police) with two children and three grandchildren.
I continued working in office situations for the next few years but wanted a job that would give me more time with my children during school holidays. In 1980 I started working in the School Photography industry as a Kindergarten photographer and by 1986 I had started my own School photography business, Advanced Photographers, where I am to this day.

Jordan, Dave
A story by Marty Grogan: Circa: Late 1967 Location: Ships Office, HMAS DUCHESS alongside Garden Island Captains Sec: POWTR Dave "Tubby" JORDAN I was working in the Office one day with ABWTR Colin a.k.a. Knocker, Cylindrical or Circular WHITE R59--- (ex CERBERUS JR, ex NAAH) (RIP as a result of MVA near Hastings in the mid 70's)when we heard a lot of screaming and yelling coming from outside the Ship. Knocker whacked his Bollard out the Scuttle and on seeing a ferry load of kids on a Harbour Excursion who were waving furiously at all the Navy Ships yelled out "All those that want a ----, wave" Now Tubby was the straightest arrow ever and a regular Church goer. When he heard Knockers foul language he promptly ripped him up for toilet paper. Knocker said, "give me a break P.O. they were that far away they would not have been able to hear me, look for yourself". So Tubby whacked his bollard out the Scuttle and of course by this time the ferry was just about alongside us and the first people Tubby saw were a bunch of Nuns who were obviously Guardians for the kids. He went absolutely ballistic and gave Knocker the option of 5 days stoppage from him or front the Captain. Knocker had just come off chooks so decided that Tubby's punishment was the lesser of two evils. We were getting ready for Admirals inspection so Knocker had to stay back every night to paint and clean the Ships Office. By the 4th day Knocker was getting really p.ssed off and said that he was going to desert. I was a Kellick at the time in the Captains Office and he was in the Pay Office so I told him that if he was going to do a runner that he had to type his own Warrants for Arrest before he left otherwise I would fill him in. So on his 5th night of Tubby's stoppage he spent all night typing the Warrants for Arrest and also a letter to his relief casting dispe rsions on Tubby's Parentage, Body Mass, you name it, he covered the lot. He placed all of these in a Pussers envelope and marked it "To my relief" and put it in his top drawer. The next night he thundered ashore to the Rockers did a job on himself and flopped back onboard forgetting that he was supposed to be doing a Runner. Everything returned to normal and Knocker had obviously decided not to Desert after all but of course forgot about the envelope. A couple of days later Tubby was doing his final check of everything before Admirals and came across the dreaded envelope in Knockers top drawer. "What's this he said" tearing open the envelope while Knocker was slowly sliding under the desk. Talk about WW III. Knocker got trooped this time for wasting Public Property to wit AS??? 11 Punishment Warrants and I Pussers envelope. It was a rocky period in Knockers life and one we often laughed about later.

Keig, David When the call came from the Adelaide RSO to tell me that I was going in the First Intake of JR's in 1960 I couldn't imagine I would have his job some 13 years later! Then came the long train ride across the Nullabor, sleeping in a luggage rack and learning the rudiments of poker from another future Scribe, John Trafford.
Leeuwin in 1960 was thought of by most of the JR's as a Stalag or POW camp - seemingly endless and senseless group punishments (doubling around the parade ground with rifle over head during the so called silent hours) that would never be accepted today, one miserable offender actually drummed out of the Service (he had a still built under hislocker) with ribbons and flashes physically cut off his uniform by a Master-at-Arms at Divisions and muffled drums to accompany the slow march to the main gate.
So the transition to a hammock at Cerberus and then the Supply School in the Winter of '61 was a mere walk in the park. Graduation as a Writer II was a real eye-opener though. Writing up pay under the supervision of such luminaries as Rhubarb Roberts & John Magor was the real beginning to 20 years of a fabulous career filled with interesting people, mostly terrific postings, promotions and friendships that still endure today.
Warship DIAMANTINA was the next step with a year spent on Indian Ocean transits to Singapore - a real eye opener for a rawbone seeing RN Cruisers at first hand, the finals of the heavyweight boxing championship of the Far East Fleet with Ron Coridas and Ray Lemon boxing, visiting the atomic bomb test site at Monte Bello and an Oceanographic Survey in what seemed to us like Antarctic waters.
Being overflown by Indonesian MIG aircraft was scary as was eating the asbestos dust that accompanied any firing of the main "armament". Years later the system awarded an ASM and clasp FESR for this particular operation.
Postings to Harman, Navy Office, Cerberus, Melville, Lonsdale, Cerberus(again) and then Victoria Barracks in Melbourne were accompanied by promotion to Leading Writer in '64 and PO in '66 and facilitated the experience of working with some of the characters (& rogues) of the Branch - Snow Faulkner, Leo Kenshole, Boots Brittain, Wettex of football fame, Les Whelan, Kevin Simpson and the never to be forgotten Horsfield.
President Lew distinguished himself by falling asleep driving to Albury/Wodonga whilst at the wheel of his VW which promptly rolled over on the highway, waking his passenger (me) violently. I recall we put it back on its wheels and drove slowly but perhaps the story has dimmed in my memory!
Promoted to Acting Sub Lieutenant SD SU W - apparently the youngest Commissioned Officer from the ranks since WW II - at the beginning of 1969 saw yet another posting to Cerberus but with the variety of roles as SO Pay, SO Cash and Supply School Instructor.
The latter job was fascinating as the various classes came and went and as the 'W' Training Officer, setting fair and meaningful exams took on a new meaning. Several of the Instructors were keen to remind me that I may well have passed the SD exams but having failed one subject for CPO Writer, this was the benchmark upon which I was to be forever judged in their eyes.
And who could forget the introduction of Group Pay - the Victorian CIB advised that the Cerberus payroll was to be stolen by armed robbers and the pay office quadrangle was sandbagged and the Gunnery School provided machine guns and armed sentries for a couple of days. Not much fun doing rounds there at midnight I recall. A freezing (sailor) sentry with a weapon is a scary thought, especially in the depths of winter in country Victoria.
The Writers, led by a very junior PO were dispossessed of their volley ball court and disconsolate for days! The thought that I could be shot probably cheered up some of them as we (they) were working to midnight for weeks to get the pay rise implemented. Interestingly, the Acting PO Wtr became one of the team that I mentored and with strict supervision, Grogan developed quite well over the years.
HMAS MELBOURNE was the next posting and once the Fleet Air Arm Squadrons were embarked, multi national (RIMPAC) exercises were conducted off Hawaii. A further fleet operation occupied some four months with Exercise SEA HAWK via Subic Bay and Manila and then attachment to the ANZUK Force (ASM & clasp SE ASIA) and fleet operations and visits to Singapore, Hong Kong & Djakarta. To this day I find it incongruous that the "system" then withheld the award of the clasp because of service in the Strategic Reserve years earlier.
A highlight of this posting was a unique fleet anchorage in Seeadler Harbour (Feb. '72) prior to going to Subic. The largest concentration of warships since the end of the War with numerous Navies taking part and I don't have a 'photo of it..
A tour of duty recruiting in SA was followed transfer to the General List (GL SU) and then by a posting to the Fleet Supply Team working in a variety of roles in BRISBANE, DERWENT, SUPPLY & STALWART. Then came a posting as Deputy Supply Officer in HMAS HOBART, three months of exercises and trials off the coast of NSW then the big Exercise "KANGAROO ONE".
Back to Cerberus and the Supply School, this time in a student seat for the Supply Charge Course before joining HMAS SWAN as Supply Officer for some 18 months - a fabulous posting.
SWAN was deployed to Darwin as part of a Naval Task Force standing-by in the lead-up to the Indonesian invasion of East Timor and the ensuing massacre of Australian journalists in Balibo (Operation "LONGWISE"). After a transit to Singapore, SWAN then took part in a combined RAN / RN fleet operation Exercise "SWIFT SWING" en route to Australia.
Going into refit at Williamstown was the final part of that posting but a family holiday in the US was a bonus at the commencement of a posting to the staff of the Australian Naval Attache in Washington, DC. The FFG project was getting underway and ANA's staff looked after the ships companies undertaking training, many accompanied by their families.
The workload was demanding and the learning curve steep but the Supply team successfully paid and supported personnel the length and breadth of the United States, occasionally extricating them from jail or the like.
ILS training, promotion to Lieutenant Commander & Navy Office Canberra beckoned but after a short while, the potential for a new career outside of the military was appealing and eventually a role in admin. and logistics with oil & gas company SANTOS was secured and some years later, hanging out a shingle as a management consultant was fairly successful.
The Navy provided great role models for a young guy making his way up the ladder from Leeuwin to Lieutenant Commander - the young Divisional Officers, Lieutenants like Jim Dickson and Peter Hardy must have wondered what they had done to be posted to the JR training depot; the old and bold Chief and PO Writers like Herrick, Simpson, Medaris and Eckel must have turned grey over the new generation they trained.
Just as we now do over the next generation! A fabulous career of twenty years that I wouldn't change for anything.
Especially when I recall the day when airline baggage handlers were on strike and ex Writer and then QANTAS Reservations Manager Mr. Magor carried my bags at Sydney airport (with tears in his eyes).....

Kemp, Reg Reg ‘Roger’ passed away 17th February 2010. R2015. Served 03/09/1939 -03/06/1946. At not being successful in joining the Merchant Service as a Cadet Purser I applied for entry into the RAN. Reserve at Lonsdale in March 1938 and was accepted as a Writer.
On the 29th August 1939 I received a telegram at home, from Lonsdale, stating the imminence of war and to report to the naval depot at 7.00 a.m. the next morning. The following day I was on the "Spirit of Progress" bound for Sydney to join Yarra at Garden Island. After a lengthy medical "check-up" the "Master-at-Arms" showed me the ship's office which was my place of duty for close on twelve months.
Yarra, which was a mine sweeper, went to sea in late September under the command of Cdr. W.H. Harrington, sweeping between Sydney and Perth making a clear passage for troopships into the Indian Ocean. We did this the best part of nine months. We also visited the Southern Ocean chasing German ships. Yarra visited all ports of Australia and Tasmania which helped to train a number of new entries into the Service. The first three months on board was not easy and discipline was everywhere.
At the end of August I left Yarra in Perth and traveled to Cerberus. On arrival at the huge training depot in Victoria - my home port, I entered most departments for a time and then went to Drafting Office until I left depot for Australia in January 1942. My time in Cerberus was a change from sea service and I made some good friends who remain so to this day.
I joined Australia in January 1942 and went to Captain's Office until I left in November 1942, returning to Rushcutters Bay for three months.
My time in Australia was most fulfilling - the most senior of naval staff were onboard for better part of the time and during the Coral Sea episode we were closed-up for lengthy periods. At that time we had Vice Admiral Sir Victor Crutchley VC, RN, onboard assisting Captain Harold Farncomb, RAN as well as many other senior officers - so discipline was taut.
At Rushcutters Bay Depot the Pay Commander had me change the office in many ways with the help of a WRAN - this was my first experience with the-opposite sex - her father was a RAN Commander!
Drafting Office in Cerberus had me return in early March 1943 to assist in a busy period. There was a rumour that personnel were required for "N" class destroyer "pool" overseas. There was a vacancy for a Writer on Nizam and so I applied. Nizam was selected to make passage for a group of Writers and Supply Assistants to replace personnel in Mombassa (East Africa).
Due to Lord Mountbatten changing scene of operations to Colombo in 1943 consequently RAN had set up an accounting office in Ceylon under ‘Royal Navy’ conditions. The RAN Paymaster Commander already in Colombo was to make some changes to the original placing of personnel.
I did not remain on Nizam as the Commander required an L. Writer ashore. Apart from a few breaks I remained in Colombo till August 1945. Time spent there had its perks! I took passage on Geraldton late in August for home.
Due to wealth of work at Potts Point, Sydney I remained there until discharge in June 1946. In summing up seven years of active service - it was some experience.

Kennedy, Ray – R57566 – Served 13JAN61 to 12JAN81. On joining the Navy there were 2 RCTWTRs who had to wait for me to join before starting t he Writers Course. One RCTWTR Griffiths changed his rating to RCTCK and the other RCTWTR Boucher was given a Medical Discharge before completing the course.
On completion of the course 27JUN61, I was posted to the Movements Office, Main Gate Cerberus until posted to Quickmatch on 25NOV61 until 11DEC62 having served with some memorable characters such as Peter (Shaky) Samuels, Peter Donkin & ‘Woggie” Watson.
Having served at Watson in the interim, was posted on 15JUL63 to Rushcutter working on Service Documents for RANR Records and correspondence until 05FEB64. After Rushcutter, I was posted as THE Writer on Diamantina on 06FEB64 – on seeing my posting I rang Navy Office to find out why I had been sent to Diamantina in WA and was promptly told “Your have a further 10 months sea time to serve and as you come from Bunbury, WA you were posted to Diamantina” ‘Huh, I come from Bundaberg QLD”
“To bad you have already been posted”. Needless to say I spent 11 months until 08JAN65 before being posted to Albatross
With the establishment of the RAN Trials Assessing Unit at the Gunnery Centre Woolloomooloo on 25OCT66, I was posted as Captain’s Secretary and when the unit moved to Rushcutter I became the Librarian – responsible for the upkeep of all Books of Reference and official publications – a position I h eld for 5 months and was posted to Melbourne on 28OCT68.
(Left 1969)On 24th May 1971 I was posted to the staff of the Directorate of Naval Personal Services to assist in the formulation and administration of conditions of Service and all matters related to the well being of Naval personnel – also established the “Umbrella” social workers office in Civic Centre with 2 Social Workers, Doug Kennedy, a WRWTR as receptionist and a WRMTD. After being there for nearly 4 years I asked LT Frank Shugg how long I have to serve there for & he told me 3 years and when I said I’d been there longer than that he had me posted to Brisbane. Having been out of the Branch for so long I asked to be posted to Kuttabul for 5 months to refresh my writer’s duties.
Although I spent a fair bit of my Service outside the main stream, I am still proud to say I was a Writer in the RAN.

After this period I was posted to Navy Office - CNS/DCNS in January 1977. Served with Robbie Robson and also met Bruce “Beast Klimeck. After my promotion I was sent to Department of Defence (JIO) and worked there until July 1987 when I was posted toHarman (NO-DSP) in the Promotions section. I was promoted to CPOWTR in August 1989 and in December, posted to Encounter as NOCSA Secretary. On 12 April 1993 I discharged from the Royal Australian Navy as a CPOWTR. These days I work at Trans Adelaide (trains) in between taking the odd cruise around the Pacific

Kisnorbo, Bert Ex LSWTR – R109874. Commenced life as a “new grub” in the RAN when I joined the 35th Intake (Stevenson Division) at JRTE – HMAS Leeuwin in April 1971.
Survived Leeuwin achieving the gratifying status of “top shit” prior to being posted to HMAS Stalwart as ORDWTR for some sea service (1 x night outside Sydney heads) and then on to HMAS Cerberus for the WTR Category course.
On completion of the course and on promotion to WTR2, was posted to HMAS Watson (fond memories of Vic Venaglia, Mick Devenish and Stu Merilees) prior to joining HMAS Sydney at Garden Island.
Exchanging posting with my old JRTE comrade Brose Palmer saw me walking up the HMAS Supply gangway and setting sail for the South Pacific in search of new adventures. Instead, found myself sharing a cabin (quite a luxury) with WTR Johnny Ptak and reporting to LSWTR Mick Gleaves with Supply bob Fred Grace at the head and Laurie Dillon making up the “upper echelon” of the Scribe contingent.
On returning to Australia, after some 68 straight days at sea supporting HMNZS Otago and HMNZS Taranaki defying the French with their nuclear testing programme at Mururoa Atoll and a memorable night of R&R at Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, and some toe drying moments in Norfolk Island, was posted to Cerberus Pay Office as a fully fledged WTR joining such heavyweights as Marty Grogan, Brian Eagles, Pete Tanner and Don Carmichael, Adrian (Bomber) Brown et al.
Further shore time followed with a stint at HMAS Lonsdale in Port Melbourne where I was personally tutored/mentored by the illustrious Pat Scully and Dave Whelan before joining HMAS Harman in Canberra and “serving time” in the Pay Office under then Napoleon look-alike, CPOWTR Louie the Lip Horsfield, and fellow inmates, George Kitchener, Neil Spackman and one Mick Kelleher.
Exchanged posting with my old comrade Brose Palmer and ended up at DSP with Barry Clements, British Hardwick, Robby Robson, Bruce (BC, the Beast) Klimeck. Lucked a quick trip out of DSP to Diego Garcia, the Seychelles and Mauritius on HMAS Moresby prior to returning to Navy Office and paying off in April 1977.

Klimeck, Bruce After reaching the halcyon rank of POWTR in 1982, Bruce was commissioned as a Supply Officer in 1987. Following training he was posted to Stirling followed by his first sea posting as a Supply Officer in Stuart. The call of Navy Office again beckoned and a position in the Directorate of Naval Personal Services ensued. This allowed him to pester the Poster who sent him to Huon in July 1991. After 3 yrs in the Apple Isle, Bruce was posted to the Army School of Transport at Puckapunyal for 10 months. This was followed by first posting to Cerberus as the Logistics Officer and subsequently the Personnel Support Officer. Following promotion to LCDR he was posted as the Supply Officer Melbourne in SEP96. This was particularly poignant as his first ship was the Carrier Melbourne as a SMNWTR in 1976. He accepted a redundancy from the RAN and left after 24 years service.

Some of the Creswell Writers at the time included POWTR Ron Tregear, POWTR Morrie Johnston, LSWTR Bob Nichols, LSWTR Geoff ‘Tab’ Hunter, LSWTR Steve Murray, ABWTR Garry ‘Tug’ Wilson, ABWTR Paul Ferris, ABWTR Ian Robertson, ABWTR Shakey Bennett, ABWTR Ross Crampsie and ABWTR Barry Barclay. Lambie, Rod R 54866 Ex CPOWTR I tried three times to join the Navy. First for the College at 13 – my mother talked me out of it, then again at 15 – I talked myself out of it, then at 17 for the Fleet Air Arm as a pilot but I couldn’t pass the science test, so it was obvious an officer’s life was not for me and I was told I could join as a writer.
I joined in October, 1958 and went to Cerberus for the writers’ course where I passed OK and then stayed at Cerberus as a Wtr2 and Wtr. Made a CW candidate but that didn’t last long as a certain Captain (S) decided I wasn’t “an officer’s bloody bootlace” – all I was doing was reading the paper in the Accounts Office right beside the CPO Wtr – so becoming an officer eluded me again.
I was drafted to Lonsdale in May 1960, now that was a real smack in the face, because I was ready to go to sea or at least somewhere new – not to a rest home for tired sailors and only six miles from home. However it did mean I slept at home most nights.
After two and a half years ashore in June 1961, I finally got a sea draft – Warrego, whack oh, surveying off the oz coast instead of exploring the mystic Far East. Ron Herrick was POWtr - taught me how to be a real sailor!! I met his wife in the early ‘70’s and she told me he had been lost at sea off a yacht and I was sorry to hear it because he was a real dinkum bloke. I found I could fit a stretcher under the office desk so that became my cabin, aft in the officers cabin flat, for the rest of my time in the ship – who wants to sleep in hammocks? That certain Captain (S) came into my life again on Admiral’s Inspection and commended me on my good work. Such is life!!
Made LWtr May 1962 and was immediately drafted from Warrego to Navy Office Canberra, in the seamens’ drafting section with Jack Cummins, another gentleman and great friend. I only stayed there a year and was drafted to stand by Derwent being built in April 1964.
I was based at Lonsdale again and travelled each day to Williamstown - the XO, CERA, Buffer and I watched the ship come to life, complete sea trials and become a warship. That was an interesting life seeing a ship change from a rust bucket to a real warship and it was also interesting when we skidded through the Port Phillip Heads in a storm during sea trials. The Heads were closed to shipping immediately we got through.
After commissioning, DERWENT went through all its paces in Australian waters and was plane guard for USS ENTERPRISE during her visit. That was some ship to see! Finally we were sent to the FES where we were involved in the Indonesian confrontation.
I made POWtr in August 1964 and was drafted to Sydney in July 1965 for the Vietnam Vung Tau Ferry. In April 1966 I was drafted to Navy Health in Melbourne as PO in charge where Roy Sly gave me a three month hand over. Another interesting job away from pay and accounts, etc. and I looked forward to a couple of years there. However, after nine months I found a signal asking for volunteers from PO or CPO Wtrs for SEATO Headquarters, Bangkok and the closing day was next day. So I asked the boss (CDR Bill Worrall) to recommend me. He wasn’t really impressed after the long handover but agreed and sent a quick signal and I got the job.
So, strings were pulled to get me and my wife and kids passports (in 2 days) and Thai visas (1 week) and we were off to Bangkok for two years in April 1967. I was involved in the Military Planning Office Se cretariat, preparing reports of military meetings. My title was Non Commissioned Officer in charge of SEATO Military Publications and assistant SEATO Military Planning Office Work Co-0rdinator. Phew!! During my time Jack Cummins was in the Australian Office and he was relieved by CPO Wtr Lindsay Webb.
I was promoted to CPO Wtr in March 1968, in Bangkok and in May was drafted to CerberuS for leave and then to Parramatta in August 1969. I was really drafted to SUPPLY but a certain Chief Writer wrote me a very sad letter and asked me to change drafts. Now doesn’t that make me a good Samaritan? – or a dill - because I finally agreed.
Parramatta was due to leave for the FES the next day, when a ferry decided to make love to our ships office, where I was at the time. Now seeing the bow of a ferry right beside you in a cosy ship’s office is a little bit thought provoking. We had a hole in the bulkhead of the ship’s office and the wardroom wine store; and a lot of beer and plonk fell on the ferry’s focsle – drunken sailors breaking ferries was all the news - we were in Chowder Bay after fuelling and couldn’t maneuver - it just sailed straight into us. Repairs completed we were off to the FES tour during the Vietnam War, was chased by a typhoon and travelled everywhere flat out at about 28 knots – very exhilarating.
My family decided I was not allowed to sign on so I paid off in Fremantle in October 1970.Now retired and living on Bribie Island, Queensland.

Lawson, Des
“I was born Allan Desmond Lawson at Maryborough, Vic August 26th 1928. I h ave attained the OBE (over bloody eighty!) and will soon qualify for the SOB (Silly old bugger). Joined in Melbourne at Rialto House 10th February 1947 and went straight to Cerberus as was the custom. Did my prelims and was posted Lonsdale then to Navy Office (known as bullshit castle) in St Kilda Road. Several scribes there, Lou Pinsach, Charlie Wilcox, Denis Collison, CPO Tom Davis and ? Kaye. Wanted sea service so applied for Tarangau at Dreg Harbor, New Guinea and was posted Condamine in transit. L/Commander John Dawson was the Captain, liked a beer (or two). Right Des in 1940.
Disembarked at Port Moresby and flew across to Finchhaven (one of the many ways it was spelt). The big boss there was FOIC (NG), Captain Claude Brecks, a great bloke. The Exec was Commander Arnold Green, an absolute shocker, with his Stupid dog ‘Bomber’. Divisional branch Officers were L/Commander Watson (Supply) and NCO Warrant Officer Hyal beck (or Brock), both the sort of blokes that made navy life hell. Had 12 months or so there, and then flew down to Penguin to get ‘lost’ in the system. No gear – no pay – just a naval nomad. Finally went by train to Melbourne, arrived in about 1 degree old measure, wet and cold, dressed in anti malarial gear, no hammock, no money – god help me! Anyhow, got a bed, a feed and some folding stuff and settled into Lonsdale until demob in 1949. My service number was L34130.
I have the Australian Service medal, 1945/75 Papua NG, Australian Defence medal, 60th anniversary medal WWII for service
